Mercury in Cancer

Phew. We are completely out of remnants (also known as the shadow) of Mercury Retrograde in Gemini and, as of July 7th, we should be feeling some relief around the things Mercury rules - communications, commerce, travel and mechanics. Take a breath - Mercury is staying direct until September 27th. But we’ll talk about that later. ;-)
As of July 11th, Mercury moves out of the chatty air sign of Gemini and into the intuitive water sign of Cancer. Mercury moves quickly - you’ll see it switch signs about every three weeks. Mercury in Cancer wants you to create a space of comfort, develop your inner and outer security and listen to your intuition. You may be surprised by the transformation over the next three weeks.
Don’t forget - Cancer is ruled by the Moon. La Luna speaks to mothering, intuition, emotions and self-protection. Cancer’s symbol is the Crab and they are very content sitting in their own little house protected, thank you very much. If they get hurt, they will retreat to protect themselves so be aware Mercury in Cancer can make us oversensitive. But no fear, talking about it can work us through it.
Mercury in Cancer encourages us to speak and understand communications from an intuitive standpoint. Can someone truly recognize my deepest feelings? There may be misunderstandings because we might expect someone to “know” us but no one can sense what we mean or need ALL the time. So if you need to say it, say it because it can clear up confusion.
This is a time we’re reflecting on what we need to feel safe, secure and protected. We can establish what we want as our home base and express that beautifully. Our awareness about ourselves and others we are in close relationships with has the opportunity to grow stronger but nothing happens without letting your emotions guide you. You can get your nurturing and comfort in your private space (physically and emotionally.) This is a time to take action through what is EMOTIONALLY calling to you. Pick up the journal or join that support group IF it fits for you (or find another way to write, chat, sing, talk about things). Healing can come through open communications but your tolerance for insincere flattery and deceptive words is incredibly low. You’re too in tune.
Now, having said that, Mercury in Cancer can be overly emotional. Does it hurt to take a breath and center before you make the phone call or send that email? Not at all. This is different from a Mercury Retrograde. With a Retro, you have to make sure you send the email or the phone call goes through because it can just get lost in the ether. Mercury in Cancer wants you to PAUSE if you feel like you’re going to blow up because your message may get through all too quickly and you’d be wishing for Mercury Retrograde to swallow up that voice mail if it’s over the top. If you’re spinning, do your best to center. And if you don’t and you blurt something out, cut yourself some slack, maybe that was the way it was supposed to happen.
You can also get sentimental during Mercury in Cancer so take a look at your ancestry, check out old photos of family or friends, and take a drive down memory lane. It’s fun to revisit but don’t get stuck in the “good old days''. As Billy Joel said, the good old days weren’t always good and tomorrow ain’t as bad as it seems.
Bottom Line?
Mercury in Cancer loves to revisit, renew and recharge through expression. Is it time for you to make the changes that will bring you inner peace? Yes! Take some time to listen to your intuition and emotions and spot check your ideas through those you trust. You have moments where you’ll think “Why didn’t I think of that before?” Now you have.
